Shah Deniz
Major Oil Field Expansion
Discovered in 1999, Shah Deniz started producing gas in 2006 and currently supplies nine billion cubic metres of gas per year. Work is well advanced on a major expansion of the field that will more than double the field’s output supplying customers in Turkey and across Europe.
The Shah Deniz II, also known as the Full Field Development project, includes the completion of twenty-six new wells, construction of two new bridge-linked offshore platforms and the installation of over 500 km of subsea pipelines that will connect the field with the Sangachal terminal which is being expanded with new gas processing and compression facilities. First gas is planned for 2018 and will feed the new capacity into the expanded South Caucasus Pipeline.
Solutions Expertise
Prysmian has played an important role in this project by supplying over 5 million metres of cables for the expanded gas terminal and the South Caucasus Pipeline extension. Prysmian provided engineering support during the system design phase and our plants in Turkey, Italy, the Netherlands and the UK have worked together to supply 110 kV HV cable & accessories, HV cable installation, MV & LV power cables, instrumentation & fibre optic cables and LV/MV cable cleats. To ensure there were no delays in the project schedule, a Prysmian service team was mobilised to oversee cable installation.
Safety – At the Heart of the Project
Safety, as always, has been a key consideration for the key technical partner in the project consortium. The Prysmian research and development team spent over two years developing and testing SeaflameTM, a new range of cables that offer enhanced fire protection. The result was a cable that exceeded BP’s demanding technical requirements by being able to remain operational during a fire that burns for more than six hours at temperatures exceeding 1,000 °C. SeaflameTM also is able to withstand mechanical shocks and continues to perform its safety critical duty while exposed to water spray and jets.
