What is ABB FIA Formula E, the world’s first championship for electric cars?

Last January Prysmian Group signed a sponsorship agreement with Avalanche Andretti Formula E as one of the major sponsors of the team for the 2022/2023 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

As a global leader in the energy and telecom cable system industry and key enabler of energy transition and electrification, the agreement will see Prysmian Group provide the team with solutions to support the transmission of power and information across all of their sustainable electrification efforts.

The partnership contributes to further strengthen Prysmian Group’s value proposition, as it enables the Group to promote and lead innovation in the strategic industry of e-mobility where cable and optical fibre technologies are essential for cars, charging infrastructures and related grid integration.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Prysmian Group, a global leader in electrification and a true innovator, as a partner of the Avalanche Andretti Formula E team. Their commitment to innovation, sustainability, and excellence aligns perfectly with our team's values, and we are excited to work together to push the boundaries of electric racing. This partnership is a testament to the important role Formula E plays in driving forward the future of mobility and we can't wait to see what we can achieve together both on and off the track.”

But what exactly is Formula E?

The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship explained

Formula E is a global, all-electric racing series that features single-seater race cars which are used a platform for the development of electric vehicle technology and as a means to promote electric and sustainable mobility, aiming to showcase the potential of electric vehicles and accelerate change towards a greener future. Formula E consists of a series of races held in major cities around the world featuring advanced technology such as regenerative braking systems that allow them to recharge their batteries during the race. Last season, 100% renewable energy was used in seven of the ten race events.

Sustainability is core to Formula E's mission, which is why the organizers have committed to pursuing net-zero impact since inception. The championship has also helped to raise awareness of the importance of sustainability and clean energy, inspiring fans and the automotive industry alike to embrace a more sustainable future. The Formula E 2022 Sustainability Report demonstrates that they are on the right track towards their claim of “racing for better futures”, and in November 2022 Formula E was ranked as the Best Total Performer in the 2022 Global Sustainability Benchmark in Sports (GSBS)1 .
